Dr. J. William Jones' "Reminiscences of General Robert E. Lee" is universally regarded as one of the most valuable and interesting works on the South's great commander, but copies of the original work are rare. Its reissuance in a new edition by the Publishing Division of the United States Historical Society makes this fascinating work, written by a man who knew Lee intimately, easily available for the first time in many years.The greatness of Lee is now acknowledged, in the North as well as the South, and beyond the seas. His mansion in Arlington, across the Potomac from Washington, is a nation shrine, by act of Congress. When he died in 1870, aged sixty-three and looking twenty years older than that, his hair and beard snow white, the New York Herald said his passing would bring "one mighty voice of sorrow, resounding throughout the country and extending over all parts of the world where his great genius and his many virtues are known." Similar tributes appeared in many other Northern newspapers, as well as in the British press. The latter seemed to echo the oft-quoted statement of Viscouont Wolseley: "I have met many of the great men of my time, but Lee alone impressed me with the feeling that I was in the presence of a man who was cast in a grander mold and made of a different and finer metal than all other men."Lee was supremely great as a military strategist and tactician, but he was equally great, after the war, in urging all his old soldiers to forget their animosities and become loyal Americans.The United States Historical Society is pleased and proud to be working with Washington and Lee University on this and other projects.
